Welcome to my Alternative College Football Playoff History page. I wanted to create a page which would not only highlight my idea of how a college playoff system would work, but how it would have worked had it been implimented in the past.

I believe that this system would have started with 12 teams in 1936. It would've given automatic berths to the winners of the Pacific 10, Big 10, Big 12, SWC, SEC, and Southern conferences, while leaving 6 wild card spots open for independents or teams that did not win their conference. over time, as more conferences became recognized as major conferences, the playoff system would've been expanded to include the winner of that conference and an additional wild card team. For example, I gave a spot to the WAC champion starting in 1966, because this was the first year that the WAC was considered a strong enough conference for its champion to receive a bowl invitation. In my opinion, the ACC would've gotten a berth in 1953 (replacing the Southern), the MAC in 1968, Southland in 1976, Big West in 1981 (replacing the Southland), Big East in 1991, Conference USA in 1996 (replacing the SWC), the Mountain West in 1999, and the Sun Belt in 2001 (replacing the Big West)

My conference tiebreaker system is designed to fairly decide which team would've been considered the conference champion had all of the conferences used the same tiebreaker system instead of coin tosses or conference member votes (like Michigan State voting for Ohio State to go to the Rose Bowl). The first tiebreaker was head to head. In a two-way tie, if one team beat the other, the winner would have been considered the champion. If a three or more team tie, then if one team beat all of the others, then it would be considered the champion. The second tiebreaker was in case there were 3 teams or more tied in head to head play, then point differential amongst the three teams would be the tiebreaker. The third and last tiebreaker (mostly in case, the two or more teams involved did not play each other) would be point differential against the same conference opponents.

If a conference is listed next to a team, it means that the team is considered the winner of that conference.

I will also list a few of the teams that would've been considered on the bubble for making a playoff spot.

Big 10-Michigan gets the title due to their head to head victory over Iowa.

Big East-Pittsburgh, Syracuse, West Virginia, and Boston College all finished tied for 1st in the conference at 4-2. All of these teams played each other. Pittsburgh and Syracuse finished 2-1 within this group, while Boston College and West Virginia finished 1-2, eliminating them from the title. Syracuse beat Pitt, hence gaining the title.

Big 10-Iowa and Ohio St did not play each other and both finished the big 10 with 8-0 records. In games against common opponents Iowa had a bigger point margin than Ohio State, hence Im giving the title to Iowa.

Southern-There seems to be a dispute as to whether Duke or Clemson won the Southern Conference.Duke went 5-0 and Clemson went 4-0 in the conference. They played 2 common opponents in the conference:Wake Forest and North Carolina St. Duke won these games by a margin of 34 points where as Clemson won by 32 points, hence I'm giving the Southern title to Duke.

SEC-Tennessee, Georgia Tech and Tulane tied for the title and did not play each other at all. They had two common opponents:Alabama and Auburn. Tennessee won these two games by 28 points, Tulane by 25, and Georgia Tech by 7, hence I'm giving Tennessee the title in this scenario.
